Real-time messaging

Real-time messaging refers to communication a company delivers with little to no delay. Unlike with asynchronous communication over email, it’s a live, back-and-forth discussion. It can apply to both internal and customer-facing communication.

For external real-time messaging to be effective, customer support representatives need visibility into relevant customer context. If a support representative can’t solve an issue during real-time messaging, follow-ups can ensure the customer still gets a resolution.

Real-time messaging vs. instant messaging

Despite being similar in name, real-time messaging and instant messaging aren’t one in the same. Real-time live chats require both parties to stay active for the conversation to continue. Instant messaging, such as Slack or WhatsApp threads, lets users reply asynchronously at their own pace without closing the session.

How real-time messaging works in B2B communication

Live chat features with real-time messaging moves information from sender to receiver with as little delay as possible. A message is sent, routed through the messaging system, and delivered to the right person or application — often in seconds. Once it arrives, automated workflows or people can act immediately.

For B2B communication and customer service, that speed can make a real difference. In fact, in Front’s State of Service Expectations report, 55% of surveyed B2B customers named fast response times among service qualities they value most.
